About

Since 1993 I’ve been hosting “Big Band Spotlight” on South Dakota Public Radio. Heard every Sunday evening, the program explores the wonderful sounds and fascinating stories of the great swing bands from the 1930s and 40s. Although music has gone through tremendous changes since then, there’s something magical in those old records that still resonates today. The joyful, exuberant, swinging sounds of the big bands will never die.

Just listened to the archived copy of Big Band Spotlight featuring Boyd Raeburn. Great show! I remember playing some of his later “dance music” in the 1950’s, the his earlier years were certainly a lot more interesting and entertaining. Cheers.

    • Hi Larry,

Yes, Boyd Raeburn’s band of the late-40s played some very progressive and wild music. It’s amazing that such music should come from someone born in Faith, South Dakota is amazing. He deserves a place in the state’s hall of fame.

By the way, are you the same Larry Miller who originated Big Band Spotlight on SDPB Radio? It’s been a wonderful privilege for me to continue with the show.
